Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the electrolyte from decreasing in specific gravity during discharge and to prevent abnormal voltage from occurring during charging, by adding hollow glass short fibers to a colloid electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:Hollow glass short fibers are added to an electrolyte of dilute sulfuric acid gelled with silicic anhydride. The hollow glass fibers hold the electrolyte therein because of their capillary action. The electrolyte held inside the glass fibers do not diffuse easily because of the high affinity with glass. The sulfuric acid in the glass fibers does not contribute to discharge but diffuses gradually to the surrounding dilute sulfuric acid when discharge continues. Because of this replenishment of sulfuric acid to the electrolyte, it is possible to prevent the electrolyte from decreasing in specific gravity during discharge and to prevent abnormal voltage from occurring during charging.
