Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst having a high catalytic activity for the reduction reaction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia by supporting a vanadium compound on a titania support subject to heating treatment in an oxygen-lean gas containing hydrogen and hydrocarbons.
CONSTITUTION: Titanium oxide or a titanium compound, e.g., titanium chloride, titanium sulfate, etc., forming titanium oxide upon baking is coated on the surface of an inert base, e.g., formed or r-alumina, etc., and then heat-treated at 400 to 860°C, preferably 500 to 700°C, in a current of a gas containing less than 5% oxygen and 1 to 10%, preferably 2 to 5%, hydrogen or 0.1 to 5%, preferably 0.5 to 2%, hydrocarbons. Then, the titanium oxide support is dipped in a solution of a vanadium compound, dried, and then baked. The catalyst thus prepared has a remarkably high catalytic activity for the reduction reaction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia.
