Abstract
PURPOSE: To increase the reaction rate, to shorten the time, and to reduce the amount of a catalyst, by hydrogenating a chlorinated styrene in the presence of water and the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene is chlorinated to form a chlorination product consisting mainly of α,β-dichloroethylbenzenes and β-chlorostyrenes, which is hydrogenated in the presence of 5W500wt%, preferably 10W200wt%, of water and a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. palladium, platinum, rhodium, or an oxide thereof, to afford β- chloroethylbenzene. Preferably, water is added in the latter stage wherein β-chlorostyrenes are hydrogenated.
