Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a ≥2C hydrocarbon, by condensing methyl chloride in the presence of a lanthanum-containing catalyst, e.g. lanthanum ion exchange zeolite or lanthanum oxide on alumina silica catalyst, at a relatively low temperature through dehydrochlorination.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl chloride is condensed in the presence of a lanthanum-containing catalyst at 200W500°C through dehydrochlorination to give a ≥2C hydrocarbon. The catalyst is prepared by drying and calcining a substance, such as alumina, silica, titanium or their combination to be a carrier, impregnated with an aqueous solution of a lanthanum compound, e.g. chloride or nitrate, or ion exchange of cations in the zeolite with an aqueous solution of a lanthanum compound. This method is useful for preparing the ≥2C hydrocarbon from methane at a low temperature.
