Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable axial alignment to be accurately and readily done by so constituting the optical fiber that at its one end the external glass and cords are integrated through fusion-bonding and at the other end the cores are not fusion- bonded and their outside diameter is larger than the core outside diameter at the one end. CONSTITUTION:The branching optical fiber 1 has mutually independent cores 4a- 4g from its one end 2 to the other ends 3a-3g. At the one end 2, a tubular external glass 5 is held deposited on its outside circumference and said glass 5 and cores 4a- 4g are integrated through fusion-bonding; the respective cores being so formed as to become of a small diameter. On the other hand, at the other ends 3a-3g, the cores 4a-4g are dispersed in that state that each has a center and these are held non-fusion-bonded; the outside diameter of each core being formed larger than the core outside diameter at the one end 2. Since in this way the cores 4a-4g are integrated through fusion-bonding with the external glass 5 and are so formed as to become of a small diameter at the one end 2, the accurate and easy axial alignment may be performed in connecting with the multicore fibers.
