Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect a surface fault and an internal fault of the square billet simultaneously, to detect other various faults exactly and automatically at high speed and to reduce the cost for inspection by using both the ultrasonic surface wave and longitudinal wave.
CONSTITUTION: The tire-shaped probe 8 that is provided with the vibrators 9, 10 is made contact with the square billet BT, and when an originating signal is sent to the vibrators 9, 10, these produce the ultrasonic wave. When an incident angle is fixed, the surface wave S1 and longitudinal wave S2 are propagated from the vibtators 9, 10 to the square billet BT respectively. The surface wave S1 is propagated so that it travels along four sides at one section of the billet, and when a surface fault SF is present in the propagation course, a reflected wave from the part is caught by the vibrator 9. On the other hand, the longitudinal wave S2 is propagated toward the inside of the billet BT, and when the internal fault IF is present, a reflected wave from the part is caught by the vibrator 10. Since such an operation is continuously performed while the billet is conveyed in its lengthwise direction, the square billet can be inspected for the surface and internal faults over the entire length and circumference.
