Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent any error in measurements due to the change in the ambient temperature by controlling the phase of the output signals, which are generated from a photoelectric converting unit in accordance with the change in the ambient temperature, so that the phase difference between the two output signals may always take a preset value.
CONSTITUTION: The two optical elements facing at a small angle of inclination, for example, a reference scale 1 and a read scale 2 are irradiated from the light from a light source unit 3. The shifts of the moire fringes, which are generated by the relative movements of two scales 1 and 2, are detected by a photoelectric converting unit 4 and are detected as at least two electric signals having different phases so that the moving direction and the movement of a moving body are read out. One signal from the unit 4 is controlled in accordance with the change in the ambient temperature by a temperature compensating circuit unit 7 and is added to another electric signal at an adding circuit unit 8 so that the pahse difference inbetween is controlled to have a preset value at all times.
