Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an optically-active secondary alcohol useful as an intermediate of medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., by the biochemical resolution which comprises the asymmetric hydrolysis of an organic carboxylic acid ester of a specific secondary alcohol with esterase produced by a specific microorganism.
CONSTITUTION: Esterase produced by microorganism belonging to Candida genus, Rhodotorula genus and/or Brevibacterium genus is separated from said bacterial cells or their cultured product, and allowed to act with esters of formula I (R1 and R2 are different alkyl or alkenyl; R3 is H, or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl) or their mixture, whereby alcohols of formula II rich in one optical isomer and esters of formula III rich in the other optical isomer are obtained. The method is widely applicable to the asymmetric hydrolysis of esters of formula I, and optically- active substances of formula II which are useful in the syntheses of various useful natural organic compounds are obtained in higher optical yield than that of conventional method.
