Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title resin having improved coating performance and impregnation into substrates and aggregates, moisture and heat resistance, adhesion, and a high curing rate, by reacting phenol with formaldehyde under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: (A) One mole of phenol s reacted with (B) 3.5W6.0 moles of formaldehyde in the presence of 0.1W2.0 moles of an alkaline catalyst, preferably a tertiary amine, at 40W100°C until the water miscibility becomes 0.3W4.0ml/g, preferably 0.3W2.0ml/g. The reaction product is neutralized with an acid having a dissociation constant ≥10-5, preferably ≥10-2 to give a pH of 4.5W6.5. The resulting resin is precipitated, separated, and purified.
