Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A polymerizable sulfate of formula I [R1 and R2 are H or CH3; R3 is 1W21C (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon residue, M is alkali metal or NH4].
EXAMPLE: Ammonium salt of glycerol-1-caprylic acid-3-methacrylic acid diester-2- sulfate.
USE: Emulsion polymerization emulsifiers with various surface activities, improved emulsifying power and copolymerizability, and a slight migration to waste water, antistatic agents for synthetic resin and fibers, hygroscopicity and dyeability improvers, and raw materials for high-polymer surfactants.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a sulfamic acid in the presence of N,N-dimethyl formamide to give the objective compound of formula I. Alternatively, the compound of formula II is reacted with a complex of chlorosulfonic acid and urea at 0°C or below, and neutralized with NaOH or KOH.
