Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a fiber-reinforced metallic material of superior strength by covering a reinforcing fiber with a metal or an alloy as a matrix and discharge- sintering an aggregate of this covered fiber under press.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of an inorg. fiber of high strength and high elasticity such as carbon fiber, alumina fiber and silicon carbide fiber, esp. carbon fiber is covered with a metal such as Cu, Al or Ni or an alloy thereof in a thickness of about 1W3μ by plating, spraying, vacuum deposition or other method. This covered reinforcing fiber is cut into suitable lengths and filled in graphite dies provided with upper and lower electrodes. By applying a pulse voltage to the electrodes discharge is generated in minute gaps in the dies to scatter surface oxide films with discharge energy. A current concentrically flows to the film-free portions to generate Joule heat, and the covering metal diffuses each other. The cut covered fibers are then unified under a press. of several hundreds kg/cm2 to reinforce the covering metal as a matrix. Thus, a fiber-reinforced metallic material is obtd.
