Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare low-methanol content, high concentration formaldehyde from methanol using a metallic catalyst, safely, saving the resources and energy, by recycling the burnt exhaust gas as an inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of formaldehyde from a mixed gas consisting of methanol vapor and air, and optionally steam, using a metallic catalyst, the exhaust gas from the reaction system is burnt, and cooled to a proper temperature to recover the heat. A part of the treated gas is recycled to the formaldehyde producing process. The recycled gas is pref. 0.75W1.50 parts by volume based on 1 part of the methanol vapor.
EFFECT: The partial pressure of hydrogen gas in the gas fed to the reactor can be reduced, which contributes to the safety of the reaction. The combustion heat can be effectively utilized.
