Abstract
PURPOSE:To lower the OH content of an optical fiber the clad of which is made of P2O5-SiO2 and to enhance the refractive index controllability, mass productivity and yield by providing unnecessary mode removing sections of bent shape to the fiber. CONSTITUTION:At the incident end 5 side and the emergent end 6 side of optical fiber 4 part of fiber 4 is wound round cylinders 7, 8 to form unnecessary mode removing sections 9, 10 of bent shape. Even if the P2O5-SiO2 clad of fiber 4 is of P2O5 rich, unnecessary clad modes during transission of a photo signal from end 5 to end 6 can be removed in sections 9, 10. Accordingly, the signal can be transmitted with a predetermined single mode. A higher P2O5 content reduces the rate of vapor-phase vacuum-deposition reaction of a clad material, resulting in a lowered OH content and an enhanced yield.
