Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance charging efficiency and to prevent lowering of output and increasing of fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine, by reserving combusted gas in an EGR-gas reserving tank in proportion to the load and discharging the combusted gas into fresh mixture as cooled EGR gas after suction cycle is terminated.
CONSTITUTION: In cylinder head 3, there are formed water jacket 10 and EGR-gas reserving chamber 11 located near the water jacket 10 so that EGR-gas in chamber 11 is cooled effectively. The EGR-gas reserving chamber 11 is communicated to combustion chamber 1 by the intermediary of a valve 12. Here, arrangement is such that the valve 12 is pushed downward shortly before exhaust valve 5 is opened in expansion cycle of engine, by the force of rocker arm 16 which is moved through control of cam shaft to which the rocker arm 16 is connected via tappet (not shown), and it is kept open for a certain while, and that it is also moved downward shortly after the intake valve is closed in compression cycle of engine and is kept open for a certain while. With such an arrangement, recirculated exhaust gas, cooled appropriately, is injected into fresh mixture after completion of suction cycle, so that the required objects of the invention can be achieved effectively.
