Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a transmission clutch from burning at gear shifting time in a power transmission by coupling an input side impeller with an impeller container via an operating clutch by rotating power transmitting fluid in a torque converter.
CONSTITUTION: An impeller container 8 is connected to the input shaft 2 of a torque converter 1. An input side impeller 12 is provided via a master clutch 14 as a hydraulically operated clutch at the container 8. The actuator 19 of the clutch 14 is connected to a hydraulic pressure control circuit. A transmission is connected to the output shaft 3 of the torque converter 1. When the transmission is shifted at speed shift gear, hydraulic fluid supply from a hydraulic pressure control circuit to a master clutch 14 is shut off to discharge the hydraulic fluid in the actuator 19 of the clutch 14. Thus, the power is not transmitted to the output shaft 3 to thereby prevent the transmission clutch from heating.
