Abstract

PURPOSE: To regenerate safely and easily a waste catalyst deteriorated with V deposited, by chlorinating the catalyst to remove the V as volatile vanadium chloride and then contacting the catalyst to steam to carry out dechlorination.
CONSTITUTION: A V- deposited waste catalyst used in a process for hydrogenating hydrocarbons, e.g. Co-Ni-Mo supported on alumina is contacted to Cl2 and/or sulfur chloride such as S2Cl2 at below 350, esp. 250W100°C to convert the V into volatile vanadium chloride, mainly VCl4, which is removed by heating, evacuation, etc. after the chlorination. The V-free waste catalyst is then contacted to steam at 100W1000, esp. 200W800°C to carry out dechlorination, or it is further contacted to O2-contg. gas at 400W800°C to be oxidized, thereby regenerating the catalyst.
