Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ethynyl alcohol useful as nonionic surface-active agents, various synthetic intermediates, etc., in high yield, by reacting a ketone with acetylene in the presence of a specific alkyl-2-imidazolidinone compound as a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Ethynyl alcohol of formula III is obtained by reacting ketones of formula II (R1 and R2 are 2W20C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, etc), e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, with acetylene in the presence of an alkali catalyst, using alkyl-2-imidazolidinone compound of a compound of formula I (R3 and R4 are 1W3C alkyl; R5 is H or methyl), e.g. 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone, as a solvent. Said solvent dissolves acetylene and the alkali catalyst well and moreover is stable to alkalis.
