Abstract

PURPOSE: To generate stable Karman's vortexes to make it possible to stably meter the flow rate over the whole running range of an internal combustion engine by absorbing the negative pressure surge by an expansion chamber in the case of a low intake manifold vacuum.
CONSTITUTION: The air from an intake air guide tube 1 generates at the wake of a column 3 the Karman's vortexes of the number corresponding to the flow rate and is guided through an expansion chamber 6 and a throttle valve 2 into the intake valve of the internal combustion engine. The ultrasonic waves from their oscillator 4 are mixed with the frequency corresponding to the number of the vortexes and then are received at 5 and subjected to signal processing at 5a so that the air flow rate is detected. In this instance, as the manifold vacuum becomes lower than about 50 mm Hg, the effective area of the throttle valve 2 is increased so that the pressure surge generated at the instant when the intake valve is opened reaches the expansion chamber 6 and is absorbed thereby so that no influence is exerted upon the flow of the air in the vicinity of the column 3.
