Abstract
PURPOSE: To remove simply and efficiently heavy matals in a strongly acidic aq. soln. of ferrous chloride contg. hydrochloric acid and/or sulfuric acid by adding metallic iron to the soln. to adjust the pH of the soln. to a specific value through the reaction of the iron and acids, and then filtering the soln.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic iron, pref. porous reduced iron is added to an aq. soln. of FeCl2 of pH≤about 1 contg. hydrochloric acid and/or sulfuric acid and heavy metals such as Cr, Cd, Pd, Cu, Hg and As to adjust the pH of the soln. to about 3W6 through the reaction of the iron and acids. The concn. of FeCl2 is not esp. limited, yet it is usually about 20W40 wt%. Since the heavy metals turn to scum. they are easily removed by filtraction even in case of about 1000 ppm. By regulating the pH of the soln. to below about 1 with acid again, an aq. soln. of FeCl2 is obtd. contg. little heavy metals.
