Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a method of sealing tubular quarz bulb, according to which the portion of a quarz tube where it is to be sealed is arranged in the form of a multi-layer tube, whereby a high mechanical strength at the sealing portion can be obtained with no use of a thick tube, and yield of the sealing operation can be improved.
CONSTITUTION: Outer and inner branch tubes 2, 3 are connected concentrically to the end portion of a light emitting bulb 1 made of quarz tube. Metal foil 5 made of metal difficult to fuse is inserted to the inside of inner branch tube 3. Electrode 4 is connected to one end of the metal foil 5, and outer lead wire 6 is connected to the other end of the metal foil 5. They are fixed in required positions in the branch tube 3 and bulb 1 by means of stopper 7. In sealing operation, outer branch tube 2 is at first fused and press-fitted, and then inside of the main tube of bulb 1 and inner branch tube 3 is evacuated. In this state, branch tube portion is heated to sealedly fused the branch tube 3 and metal foil 5 together under the atmospheric pressure. After fusing, inner surface of outer branch tube 2 and outer surface of inner branch tube 3 are fused together when the branch tubes are heated.
