Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a method of treating waste water containing dithionic acid and ammonia by way of biological treatment, which comprises the steps of cultivating activated sludge containing thiocyanogen as main nutritive source under aerobic condition, then introducing waste water into the activated sludge, and thus decomposing dithionic acid and ammonia contained in waste water simultaneously by way of oxidation.
CONSTITUTION: At first, activated sludge (containing sulfuric bacteria such as thiobacillus-thiopulse, thiobacillus-neapolitanis, thiobacillus-novellous) containing thiocyanogen as main nutritive source is cultivated under aerobic condition. When the thiocyanogen contained in sludge is exidized to sulfuric ions and nitric ions, amount of nitric bacteria begins to be increased in addition to the above-mentioned sulfuric bacteria. Under such circumstances, when waste water containing dithionic acid and ammonia is introduced into the activated sludge in which sulfuric and nitric bacteria coexist, dithionic acid and ammonia are hydroxidated respectively to sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
