Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify the structure, by providing between a sprocket and a cam shaft an oil pessure chamber whose volume is increased or decreased by the relative rotation between the sprocket and the cam shaft and controlling the oil pressure in the oil pressure chamber to adjust the valve timing.
CONSTITUTION: When the oil pressure in the oil pressure chamber 7 is low, the volume of the chamber 7 is decreased due to the rotary resistance of the cam shaft 1 and the top 9a of a partition wall 9 comes into contact with one end surface of the oil pressure chamber 7. When the oil pressure in the chamber 7 rises, the volume of the chamber is increased against the rotary resistance of the cam shaft 1. Therefore, the sprocket 4 rotates in the direction of rotation of the cam shaft 1 by a quantity corresponding to the increase in the volume of the oil pressure chamber 7. Thus, the valve timing is advanced. Thereby, an intake/exhaust valve is closed earlier, and the exhaust gas flows back to the intake system. As a result, a predetermined quantity of internal recycle is obtained.
