Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a water-soluble acrylamide polymer having excellent solubility and coagulating characteristics, by the simultaneous polymerization and hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of a monomer mainly composed of an acrylamide produced by a catalytic process, with a redox initiator having a specific concentration.
CONSTITUTION: A 10-30wt% aqueous solution of monomers wherein major component is acrylamide prepared by the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile in the presence of a Cu-containing catalyst, is subjected to the simultaneous polymerization and hydrolysis using a redox-type initiator comprising a peroxide (Per.) and an amine reducing agent (Red.). The concentrations of the compounds are selected to satisfy the following formulas: Red./Per.=15-1000 (mole); [red.] x [Per.]=0.5x10-8-50x10-8 (ppm). The amine reducing agent is, e.g. monoethanolamine, nitrilotrispropionamide, etc.
