Abstract
PURPOSE: The oxidation of an aldehyde and an alcohol with molecular oxygen is conducted in the presence of a specific catalyst to produce a carboxylic ester in one-stage procedure in high yield and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde such as isobutyladehyde or methacrolein and an alcohol such as methanol are oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of at least one of Pd and its compounds and at least one of lead and its compounds at 0W100°C under atmospheric pressure to porduce the objective compound such as ethyl isobutyrate or methyl methacrylate. The Pd compound is, e.g., its acetate, formate, sulfate or others; the lead compound is, e.g., its acetate, sulfate, stearate, naphthenate, oxide or hydroxide. The above catalyst can be supported on a carrier such as alumina, activated carbon, calcium carbonate or two catalysts can be supported with each other with no use of usual carrier.
