Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound of high purity, by catalytic oxidation and dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst to form methacrylic acid, followed by reaction with a lower alcohol in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Isobytyric acid is oxidized and dehydrogenated with O2 in the gaseous phase in the presence of a hetero-poly-acid catalyst consisting of P as central atom to form crude methacrylic acid, which is esterified with a lower alcohol in the gaseous phase in the presence of a silica -tiania solid acid catalyst to give crude a methacrylic ester together with an isobutyrate from the unreacted isobutyric acid. These esters are distilled and purified, and the separated isobutyrate is recycled to the oxidation and dehydrogenation step to give the objective compound of high purity.
EFFECT: Reuse of unreacted methacrylic acid and isobutyric acid in the estenification is unnecessary, and only separation from the ester is required.
