Abstract

PURPOSE: To store high purity methacrolein, useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of methacrylic acid, stably, for a long period, by keeping the methacrolein at a low temp. thereby suppressing the dimerization thereof.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrolein, esp. high purity methacrolein is maintained at ≤10°C, esp. ≤5°C to inhibit its dimerization and to improve its stability. The addition of a generally used polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, has no effect for inhibiting the dimerzation, howerver, it is preferable to add an inhibitor in order to suppress the polymerization. For example, 1000ppm of hydroquinone is added to methacrolein and the mixture is maintained at 20°C, 10°C, 5°C, or -20°C; and the dimer comcentration is increased more than 3 times after a day at 20°C, the dimerization is inhibited at 10°C and 5°C, and the concentration of the dimer scarcely changes at -20°C even after standing for 60 days.
