Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the title electrode with esp. enhanced specific surface area and electrolytic efficiency, which is obtd. by covering the skeleton of an electrically conductive support member of an open-cell, three-dimensional, irregular network structure with a layer having electrochemical catalytic activity.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of continuous skeleton 2 of an electrically conductive support member is covered with a layer of platinum group metal or ceramics semiconductor having electrochemical catalytic activity by electroplating, powder baking, etc. The member has an open-cell, three-dimensional, irregular network structure with a porosity above 90% and a specific surface area of 500W2000 m2/m3. It is e.g. obtd. by electroplating the skeleton of an urethane foam base material having such a form with an electrically conductive metal. The resulting electrode is esp. effective for electrolysis of alkali metal chloride.
