Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ester compounds economically in two steps; i.e. the reaction of a primary (secondary) alcohol with bis (tri-n-lower alkyl Sn) oxide, followed by the oxidation with an oxidizer such as haloamides using an aldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: A saturated aliphatic primary alcohol of formula I (R1=saturated aliphatic primary alkyl) or a secondary alcohol of formula II (R=alicyclic alkyl, etc.) is made to react with a molar equivalent or a small excess of bes (tri-n-lower alkyl Sn) oxide in an aprotic solvent, e.g. benzene, carbon tetrachloride, etc., at 0W200°C to afford the corresponding alkoxy Sn alkoxylate. After or without isolation, the compound is subjected to the oxidation with a molar equevalent or a small excess of a haloamide oxidizer, e.g. N-bromoacetamide, in the presence of an aldehyde compound, e.g. formaldehyde, in a non-polar solvent at- 50W100°C to produce an ester compound of formula IV or formula V.
