Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent hunting by controlling the number of cylinders to be maintained as it is for a fixed period from the point when the quantity of operating cylinders is varied.
CONSTITUTION: The engine is equipped with a cylinder quantity controlling circuit by which fuel feeding to a portion of cylinders is stopped when the engine load is smaller than a first setting load Wh, and by which all cylinder operation is restored when the engine load is larger than a second setting load WL, and intake- air amount correcting device which increases the intake-air amount so that the rest cylinders generate the output nearly equal to that in all cylinder operation when fuel feeding to a portion of cylinders is stopped, and a cylinder quantity variation restricting circuit which controls cylinder quantity variation for a fixed period from the time when the operationg cylinder quantity was varied. The constitution described above prevents hunting phenomenon when the cylinder quantity is varied
