Abstract

PURPOSE: A syntactic foam having a low specific gravity, improved mechanical property, and uniformity, prepared by dispensing hollow spheres homogeneously in a thermosetting resin containing a thermoplastic resin.
CONSTITUTION: A syntactic foam is obtained from (A) a resin blend of a thermosetting resin and a thermoplastic resin, and (B) hollow spheres having a particle size of preferably 5W500μ by the vacuum impregnation or mixing method. The addition of the thermoplastic resin by the mixing method permits the foam having almost the same specific gravity as that obtained from thermosetting resin alone by the vacuum impregnation method. The vacuum impregnation of the resin blend gives a foam having a specific gravity about 0.1W0.2 lower than the thermosetting resin alone. If a long time is required for molding, e.g. vacuum impregnation, a combination of (a) a prepolymer having ester linkages and double bonds in the molecule and (b) a thermosetting resin consisting of a radically polymerizable monomer compatible with the prepolymer, and (c) a (co) polymer of styrene, an alkyl (meth) acrylate, etc. is preferred.
