Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it easy to minotor the inundation of a cable being laid by producing an optical cable in a manner to build in such an optical fiber as has its cladding layer and coating layer around a quartz core made of a high molecular organic chemical material having an excellent water permeability.
CONSTITUTION: An optical cable is produced by building in an optical fiber 6 which has its cladding layer 2 and coating layer 3 around a quartz core 1 made of a high molecular organic chemical material having an excellent water permability. During the laying operation, a light of a preset intensity is introduced from an optical transmitting section 4 into the optical fiber 6 capable of detecting the inundation. This light is received by an optical receiving section 5, which is arranged at the opposite end of an optical cable, so that its intensity may be measured. If an inundation takes place in a portion of the optical cable, the intensity of the light received is monitored by the section 5 so that the inundation monitoring operation of the optical cable can be accomplished.
