Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a Pb-Ca alloy with high current efficiency and low power unit by carrying out electrolysis using molten lead or a molten lead-Ca alloy as a cathode and an electrolytic bath contg. molten CaCl2, CaF2 and CaO.
CONSTITUTION: Using molten lead or a molten Pb-Ca alloy as a cathode and a CaCl2-CaF2-CaO ternary molten bath electrolysis is enabled at a lower temp. than that of a conventional method. Since CaO is contained as one of the electrolytic bath components, recombination of metallic Ca with anode gas is controlled. CaF2 contained in the bath lowers the viscosity of the bath and facilitates removal of anode gas. Thus, electrolysis is carried out at stable low cell voltage without inducing anode effect, and a Pb-Ca alloy of high Ca content can be manufactured.
