Abstract

PURPOSE: To utilize a by-product tar in the manufacture of formed coke through a shaft furnace as a binder for the briquetted coal which is in short supply, by dissolving a bituminous substance having, a specific softening point in the tar simply pretreated.
CONSTITUTION: Tar, formed in the carbonization of briquetted coal by direct heating with a high-temperature gas in a shaft furnace, is simply desludged, dehydrated, and heated in briquetting to remove the low-boiling components which distill away up to 200°C and foam the coal in heating, and a bituminous substance having a softening point of 50W400°C is dissolved in the tar and utilized as a binder for the coal. As shown in the figure, the method requires no tar distillation step and is useful for saving energy.
