Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect jam occurrence due to stop of a substrate in high response, by detecting the forward and backward ends of the substrate with substrate detectors provided in both the openings for feed and takeout to and from a heat fixing apparatus.
CONSTITUTION: The forward and backward ends of substrate are detected by detector A composed of illumination lamp 17a and photodetector 17b provided near the substrate feed inlet of heat fixation unit and during this time, measuring circuit 26 counts time and is reset. This count value is compared with the set number in accordance with paper size in a time comparator and jam of the substrate is detected in a predetermined region. On the other hand, substrate takeout is detected by detector B composed of magnet piece 19 and magnetism sensor 20 provided on a driven roller opposite driving roller 14 near the takeout opening of unit 2, and stop of the substrate in the region succeeding that detected with detector A is detected, thus permitting good jam detection to be carried out in high response.
