Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible color displaying by sealing the smectic S liquid crystal which is added with multichromatic dyes and exhibits negative dielectric anisotropy between the transparent electrode substrates having been applied with perpendicular orientation treatment.
CONSTITUTION: When the liquid crystal is slow cooled down to the S phase after having been heated to the temperature at which it is of S phase and to the temperature at which it is of nematic N phase, the liquid crystal molecules orient perpendicularly and becomes colorless and transparent. When a heat beam 8 is radiated to the cell of this state, that reqion 9 indicates slightly colored light scattering. In addition, when the cell which its liquid crystal being held applied with AC electric fields of more than several hundreds Hz is heated by the beam 8 and is quenched, then that region 10 colors to non-scattering and maintains that state even after removal of the electric fields. When the cell is heated up to the N phase and is slow cooled down to the S phase while being held applied with the abovementioned AC, the liquid cystal molecules orient parallel with the substrates and the cell colors over the entire part and maintains that state even after removal of the electric fields. When the cell of this state is heated by the beam 8 and is quenched, the liquid crystal of that region become light scattering state.
