Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the magnetic characteristics and electrical characteristics of the magnetic recording medium using the magnetic coating using phosphate of higher alcohol as a surface active agent by processing the magnetic powder to the acid side of pH≤4 in said magnetic coating.
CONSTITUTION: Magnetic powder such as γ-Fe2O3 is treated with an aqueous solution of nitric acid. 25 g of such magnetic powder is added to 500 cc of demineralized water, which is then boiled for 10 minutes. The solution which has been left standing until it cools down to ordinary temperature is measured of its pH and the value thus measured is defined as the pH of the magnetic powder. Such magnetic powder of pH value of 4 or under is kneaded together with phosphate of higher alcohol such as hexyl alcohol into a resin binder and the resultant magnetic coating is coated on a substrate such as polyester base.
