Abstract
PURPOSE:A reaction furnace for replacing the air with an inert gas is provided between the wire drawing furnace and the plastic coater, thus preventing the surface of surface-treated optical fibers from dust sticking and increasing the reproducibility and strength, etc. CONSTITUTION:Parent material for optical fiber 1 is made to descend at a prescribed speed in wire drawing furnace 3, softened by heating, and drawn into opticla fiber 4. Then the fiber is sent in reaction furnace 11 where (A) the surface is treated with a chlorination agent as thionyl chloride, or a surface-treating agent as dimethylidichlorosilane or (B) the air in the reaction furnace is replaced with an inert gas as argon or nitrogen. The optical fiber is coated with a plastic on the surface by plastic die 6, the plastic is cured by passing the fiber through curing furnace 8. Then, the fiber is continuously wound through capstan 9 on drum 10.
