Then the fiber is sent in reaction furnace 11 where (A) the surface is treated with a chlorination agent as thionyl chloride, or a surface-treating agent as dimethylidichlorosilane or (B) the air in the reaction furnace is replaced with an inert gas as argon or nitrogen. The optical fiber is coated with a plastic on the surface by plastic die 6, the plastic is cured by passing the fiber through curing furnace 8. Then, the fiber is continuously wound through capstan 9 on drum 10.
