Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the power efficiency, the quality of a substance dehydrated and the dehydration limit, in dehydration of paste or gel by electrical osmosis, by using membranes other than membranes dividing both electrode chambers to set one or more water drawing chambers.
CONSTITUTION: An apparatus is prepared consisting of cathode 1, anode 2, cathode chamber diaphragm 3, anode chamber diaphragm 4, cathode chamber 5, anode chamber 6, anion exchange membranes 7, cation exchange membranes 8, dehydration chambers 9 and water drawing chambers 10. Paste or gel to be dehydrated is charged into chambers 9, and a current is supplied to shift much water in chambers 9 as well as to deionize the water. Thus, dehydration is performed simultaneously with desalting. Since a soln. in chamber 10 is used to provide electrical conductivity, it may be a suitable electrolytic soln., yet membranes 7, 8 can be contacted closely to make the soln. unnecessary. It is desirable that membranes 3, 4 exhibit high electrical osmosis property with H2O 10 mols/faraday or more in 0.5 N salt water.
