Abstract
PURPOSE:To quantitize accurately the Nd content in a YAG single crystal with the use of a small quantity of sample by using the absorption intensity of a preset wavelength in the sample, which is measured by spectrophotometer. CONSTITUTION:A sample having its Nd concentration N known is measured with a wavelength of 5889 Angstrom to obtain an optical density. Equation of P=0.435KNL - logR [wherein: L stands for the thickness of the sample: R stands for the reflective index, when light passes over the sample surface, which is calculated from the measured value of P in the wavelength of no absorption] is used to calculate a coefficient of optical absorption K (wherein K exhibits a substantially constant value of 0.97 at %<-1> mm<-1> independently of the concentration of Nd). Then, a sample having its Nd concentration unknown is measured to quantitize the concentration N with the use of the value K obtained in the above and the above- specified Equation. Incidentally, 7848 Angstrom and 8087 Angstrom can be used as the measuring wavelength in addition to the above-specified 5889 Angstrom .
