Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the underground depth of a cable accurately and promptly, by using search coil and echo sounder and finding the difference between the distance of search coil and cable measured by search coil and the distance of search coil and bottom of water measured by echo sounder.
CONSTITUTION: A search coil 7 having a plurality of solenoid coils 7' disposed on a straight line at specified intervals is suspended in water, and an echo sounder 9 is disposed above the search coil aboard a survery ship 4. By this ship the search coil 7 is moved in a direction orthogonal to a cable 1. When the voltage of solenoid coil 7'a recorded in a receiving set 8 reaches the maximum, the voltage of coil 7'b is determined, and the distance between the coil 7 and cable 1 is obtained from the ratio K of the voltage and the spacing D of both coils, according to formula [I]. When the voltage induced to the reference coil 7' reaches the maximum, the distance d2 between the coil 7 and bottom of water 2 is determined from the observation by the echo sounder 9. Hence, from (d1-d2), the distance between cable 1 and bottom 2, namely, the underground depth, is determined.
