Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover an organic amine by a simple process and in high yield, using a reactor having relatively low pressure resistance, by the hydrolysis of an organic isocyanate compound under comparatively mild conditions using a specific amount of Ca(OH)2.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of Ca(OH)2, water, a distillation residue of an organic isocyanate, e.g. monoisocyanate of formula R-NCO (R=phenyl, tolyl, etc.), diisocyanate of formula OCN-R' -NCO (R'=1,3-phenylene, 2,4-tolylene etc.) etc., and a caustic alkali in option, is allowed to react at 140W280°C for 10 minW20 hr and hydrolyzed to recover the corresponding amine. The amount of the hydroxide used should be large enough for the absorption of the total amount of CO2 which is liberated during the hydrolysis as a carbonate. The amine may be used in the phosgenation process after extaction with a solvent suitable for phosgenation and dehydration of the extract.
EFFECT: The cost of equipment can be reduced.
