Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture metallic Mg by heat reacting MgO and a carbonaceous reducing agent in a reactor and rapidly cooling the resulting mixt. of gaseous Mg and CO with primary and secondary cooling gases.
CONSTITUTION: Mixt. 6 of MgO powder and a carbonaceous reducing agent is charged into heating furnace 1 in reactor 12 from raw material charge pipe 5, heated to above 1850°C, and reacted to form CO and gaseous Mg. At the same time, a gas such as H, Ar, CH4 or N is spouted from nozzle 4 of primary cooling gas introduction pipe 3 at such a high speed as 300W550 m/sec. The gaseous Mg is introduced into cooling chamber 10 by ejector effect while being cooled. In chamber 10, a cooling gas similar to the primary cooling gas is spouted from secondary cooling gas spouting hole 8 to rapidly cool the gaseous Mg furthermore, whereby the gaseous Mg is deposited as solid Mg in chamber 10 without inducing reverse reaction with CO. The solid Mg is gathered and refined to high purity Mg by vacuum distillation or the like.
