Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the high temp. corrosion resistance of a worked product of an austenitic stainless steel contg. Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, etc. by subjecting the product surface to Cr diffusion penetration treatment under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:One or more kinds of elements out of Ti, Nb, Zr and Ta; <=1.5% in total are added to an austenitic stainless steel contg. C<0.10%, Si<1.0%, Mn<2.0%, Ni; 8-16% and Cr: 15-20% while satisfying the relation C%<=(Ti/4) +(Zr/8)+(Nb/8)+(Ta/15). The resulting steel is worked into a stainless steel pipe and subjected to Cr diffusion penetration treatment at 900-1200 deg.C with a powder mixt. of Cr and Al2O3 by a powder pack method, followed by heating at 1000- 1200 deg.C for several min, air cooling and water cooling. By the presence of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, etc., thick Cr diffused layers with superior corrosion resistance are formed on the outer and inner surfaces of the pipe.
