Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide specific bacteria capable of producing a large amount of L-tryptophan from CO2 as a low cost carbon source, and H2 and O2.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria capable of assimilating CO2 and H2 and producing L- tryptophan, belonging to Pseudomonas, Alcaligenes, or Flavobacterium genus. Especially, tryptophan-analog-resistant variant, tyrosine-requiring variant, phenylalanine-requiring variant, phenylalanine- or tyrosine-resistant variant, etc. have higher capability to produce L-tryptophan. Examples of the above bacteria are, Pseudomonas hydrogenothermophila AJ11238, Alcaligenes eutrophas AJ11240, etc. The bacteria are cultured using CO2 or carbonate ion as a carbon source, in the presence of H2 and O2, and the objective compound can be separated from the cultured product.
