Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an optical branching and mixing device which is easy to make and is variable in optical branching and mixing guantity by changing the thickness of an interposing liquid film of a refractive index smaller than that of optical fibers through close contact and detaching of optical fivers. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1, 2 are buried in fiber fixing members 3, 4 of epoxy resin base material and the opposing faces of the members 3, 4 are polished together with the optical propagation exposed faces of the fibers 1, 2. These members 3, 4 are opposed by way of a thin spacer film 6 and liquid such as of silicon or the like of a smaller refractive index than that of the fibers 1, 2 is applied to the opposing portions of the fibers 1, 2 segmented by the film 6 and these are fixed by jigs 7, 7. Next, when the opposing parts of the fibers 1, 2 are contacted closely or detached by way of the jigs 7, 7 by the use of screws, etc., the quantity of reflected light changes with the change in the thickness of the silicon liquid film, thus the branching quantity and mixing quantity of the light propagating in the fibers 1, 2 change. Hence, the branching and coupling device of easy production and variable branching quantity and mixing quantity may be provided.
