Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a nonmagnetic steel with very low permeability, superior yield strength and superior machinability by combining regulation of the components of raw steel with specific heat treatment after hot working to form stable austnite structure. CONSTITUTION:An alloy steel contg. C; 0.25-0.40%, Si<0.60%, Mn<2.0%, Ni; 5-10%, Cr; 10-18%, N; 0.07-0.25% and sol. Al<0.10% or further contg. one or more out of V; 0.10-1.0%, Nb; 0.2-0.5% and Ti; 0.10-0.60%. An ingot of this steel is worked by hot forging, etc. and quenched at a cooling rate above air-cooling rate to prevent precipitation of carbide on the austenite grain boundaries. Next the ingot is soln. heat treated at 1050-1200 deg.C for 30 min-10 hr and cooled at a cooling rate above air-cooling rate to prevent coarsening of the austenite grains, followed by aging at 850-1000 deg.C for 30 min-20 hr. The aging may be carried out after the hot forging. Thus, a nonmagnetic steel is obtd. having a yield stress of 42 kg/mm<2> and a permeability below 1.02.
