Abstract

PURPOSE: To graft an ethylenically unsaturated organic acid onto a molded article of a hydrophobic high polymer uniformly and efficiently, by immersing the article in an aqueous emulsion of a given pH containing the organic acid with a specific concentration under heating.
CONSTITUTION: A molded article of a hydrophobic high polymer, e.g. polyester or polyamide, is immersed in an aqueous emulsion, which consists of (a) about 0.5W5 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated organic acid, e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, (b) about 0.01W5wt.% of a hydrophobic radical initiator, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, (c) a hydrophobic organic solvent, e.g. hexane or dichloroethane, and (d) a nonionic surfactant that may contain an anionic surfactant, adjusted to pH 3W3.5 with an alkali metal compound, and heat-treated at about 50W150°C for 5minW 3hr to graft the organic acid onto the article.
