Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the title copolymer continuously, without deposition of the random copolymer to the walls of a polymerizer, by performing the random copolymerization of ethylene and propylene after the polymerization of propylene in the presence of a specific catalytic system.
CONSTITUTION: Propylene is polymerized in an inert hydrocarbon solvent at 10W 80°C in the presence of a specific TiCl3 catalytic system, and charged into a polymerizer ketp at 50W70°C. Propylene, hydrogen, ethylene, etc., are also charged into the polymerizer and polymerized to obtain the propylene-ethylene random copolymer. The TiCl3 catalytic system is obtained by mixing (A) a TiCl3 composition prepared by reacting a complexing agent with a β-type TiCl3 obtained by reducing TiCl4 with an organo-aluminum compound at -20 W +20°C, and thereafter reacting the reaction product with TiCl4, and (B) an alkyl aluminum chloride of the formula RnAlCl3-n (R is alkyl; n is 1-2). The weight ratio of the TiCl3 composition to the propylene for the first polymerization stage is 1 to 50W 500.
