Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a cation exchange membrane with superior cation selective permeability and electrical properties by impregnating a fluorocarbon polymer membrane having an exchange group with lower acidity than that of a -SO3H group with a diene derivative having a -CO2H group, followed by partial polymn., swelling in an org. solvent and heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:As the above fluorocarbon polymer membrane, a membrane of a copolymer of CF2=CF2 and CF2=CF2OCF2CF(CF3)OCF2CF2SO2F, etc. is used. The membrane is impregnated with a diene derivtive having a -CO2H group and/or a group convertible into a -CO2H group, e.g. butadiene-1-carboxylic acid, followed by partial polymn. The partially polymerized membrane is then swollen in an org. solvent such as methanol and heat treated at 40-150 deg.C. The resulting cation exchange membrane has superior chemical resistance, heat resistance and mechanical strength, and it is suitable for use as a diaphragm for electrolysis esp. of alkali metal halide.
