Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the fog in texture with the use of a magnetic toner and to completely accomplish the end portions of an image by providing non-contact developing means of two stages, in which the closest spacing between an electrostatic image holding surface and a toner thin layer and the thickness of the toner thin layer are different.
CONSTITUTION: A toner support 4 of non-magnetic cylinder is supported such that it is relatively close (or about 150 microns) to an electrostatic image holding surface 1 upon a conductive back electrode 2. The magnetic toner 11 in a reservoir 10 is attracted by and carried on the support 4 by a fixed magnet 9 thereby to form a toner layer 3 having a thickness of 80 microns having a sufficient image density with the use of a toner applying member 8. Most portion 7 of an electrostatic image is developed by a first developing means. The similar support 4' parallel with the support 4 approaches the surface 1 at a spacing of about 80 microns so that the toner layer 3' having a thickness of about 40 microns and made thinner than the layer 3 is formed. The image 12 on the surface 1 having passed through the second developing means is sufficiently developed at its both end portions.
